Facilities Management: How We Support UVA

Our Employees

There were 1,198 total full-time positions in Facilities Management in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

During the annual Service Awards events in 2025, 132 employees celebrated 2,505 years of collective service.

2025 Major Capital Plan (Figures in Millions)

In June 2025, the Board of Visitors approved the 2025 Major Capital Plan for the Academic Division, UVA Health, and UVA’s College at Wise totaling $2.18B ($1,345.2M in construction; $196.5M in planning/design; $309.4M authorized but not yet initiated; and $329.4M in deferred projects, which were identified as projects that could be postponed or paused without undue disruption or financial risk).

Historical Capital Project Expenditures

Since FY2016, capital project expenditures — construction, renovation, infrastructure, maintenance reserve, and acquisitions — across all three divisions total nearly $3.4 billion ($2.46 billion for the Academic Division, $872 million for UVA Health, and $40 million for the College at Wise), averaging nearly $338 million each year.

Buildings & Grounds

  • 19.72 million square feet for all UVA facilities, includes:
    • 8.17 million square feet in Academic (E&G) Division
    • 7.08 million square feet in the Auxiliary Division (includes Athletics and Housing)
    • 4.46 million square feet in UVA Health Division
  • 547 buildings and corresponding infrastructure in the UVA portfolio, with a conservatively estimated replacement value of $8.2 billion.
  • 911,321 assignable square feet of research labs and research lab service.
  • 517,624 assignable square feet of classroom space.
  • 5.97 miles of utility tunnels.
  • 232 miles of underground heating (steam/condensate, medium temperature hot water), cooling (chilled water), water/sewer and storm sewer distribution lines
  • 1,533 solar panels on Grounds

E&G Facilities Condition Index

The Facility Condition Index (FCI) indicates the condition of UVA's portfolio of buildings by dividing the value of the maintenance backlog by the replacement value. An FCI of 5 percent or less is considered to be in good condition.

Sustainability

  • 45% reduction in carbon emissions since 2010.
    • To date, UVA and the College at Wise hold 89 LEED certifications representing over 5 million square feet of LEED certified space.
    • UVA’s Building Efficiency Program has upgraded 75 buildings since 2015 and avoided $2.7 million in utility costs in FY2025
    • Since 2021 Sustainable Labs has avoided over $4 million in utility costs
  • 22% reduction in potable water use since 2010. In 2024, UVA consumed 447.38 million gallons of potable water, compared to 574.17 million gallons in 2010.
  • 35% reduction in total waste generated since 2010, with 28% diverted from landfills in 2024.
  • 38% reduction in reactive nitrogen losses to the environment as of 2022 compared to 2010, which exceeds the 2030 goal.
  • 14% of food and beverage purchases were sustainable in 2024 (includes UVA Dine and the University Medical Center).

Occupational Programs

  • Occupational Health & Safety facilitated specialty training to help to meet their unique training needs; completed safety plan reviews and site/workplace inspections; and completed safety-related recommendations for various teams.
  • FM employees who are exposed to loud noise (85 dBA and above) become participants in the FM Hearing Conservation Program, with annual audiometric testing. There are 255 FM employees who are in the FM Hearing Conservation Program.
  • Air sampling identifies situations in which employees may potentially be exposed to airborne contaminants close to the OSHA permissible exposure limit. These 150 identified employees participate in the FM Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Three cohorts completed the Supervisor Journey in 2024, while one additional cohort began. This program provides leaders with the skills and competencies applicable in today’s workplace.
  • Occupational Training hosted six different sessions of its Lunch & Learn series, which included covering topics to help employees build a better understanding of FM and UVA processes and programs.
  • 8 multi-craft apprentices hired during the 2025 recruitment cycle with a total of 32 apprentices currently enrolled in the program.
  • Over the past three years, FM volunteers have contributed more than 800 hours to support the Southwood Habitat neighborhood through the FM Engagement Program’s partnership with the annual Women Build event organized by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville.
  • FM Occupational Programs was awarded a three-year Jefferson Trust Grant (2024-2027) to design and launch an innovative workforce development pipeline. So far, the FM Engagement Program has collaborated with FM employees and external partners — including Albemarle County Public Schools and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia — to introduce students to careers in the trades through multiple hands-on experiences both at FM and in their schools.
  • To date, more than 120 employees completed Mental Health First Aider training, an 8-hour course that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
