The state-of-the-art UVA Health Orthopedic Center - Ivy Road is one of the only facilities of its kind in the nation.

"This is one of the largest, most comprehensive orthopedic care facilities in the nation and is singularly unique with the variety of services housed here," said Dr. Bobby Chhabra, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the director of the new center. The center has gained national and international attention as the ultimate one-stop shop for orthopedic care, allowing for seamless delivery of care as patients transition through all phases of treatment.

This 201,000-square-foot facility includes a surgery center, robust surgery support with sterile processing, pre-operative and post-operative recovery rooms, a 23-hour short stay unit, a state-of-the-art Prosthetics and Orthotics department that is one of the largest of its kind, 90 clinic exam rooms for all orthopedic specialty clinics, and innovative teaching facilities including dedicated areas for Orthopedic residents and fellows. The center also has a Bio-Skills Lab, Clinical Trials research space, several conference rooms for education, physical and occupational therapy, and advanced imaging that includes two MRIs, two fluoroscopy suites, nine plain film rooms, an EOS room, and a standing CT.

The project was supported by building the Ivy Mountain Central Utility Plant which serves the Orthopedic Center - Ivy Road and is adaptable to serve another 150,000 gross square feet of future buildings on the site.

The center was designed with two primary goals: to be a one-stop regional and national destination for patients, and to maximize collaboration and comfort for the staff. Additionally, the building serves the University’s goal of being a good neighbor and provides services open to the community, not just patients. These services include food and coffee options, walking trails, retail pharmacy, physical and occupational therapies, and extensive imaging. The building also aims to be in the forefront of the national trends in providing high-quality, high-touch outpatient joint replacement for otherwise healthy patients. Previously, all total joint replacements happened at the main hospital and required an overnight stay. This facility has freed up much needed operating room time and patient beds at the University Hospital.

The project teams for both the  Orthopedic Center - Ivy Road and the Ivy Mountain Central Utility Plant were comprised of ZGF Architects, construction manager Whiting-Turner, and the Capital Construction & Renovations team which included Associate Director for UVA Health George Southwell, Senior Project Manager Mashal Hartman, Senior Construction Administration Manager John Marshall, and help from other CC&R members Carolyn Chionchio, Keith Schrimp, and Mark Humbertson.

“It takes a village to design, build, and deliver a large building project successfully,” said Mashal Hartman. “Despite many challenges, including massive amounts of rock, extreme market conditions, supply chain issues, triple the number of early packages than planned, and the COVID pandemic, the building was turned over to UVA Health three months ahead of schedule. The entire project team worked tirelessly to overcome all challenges to scope, schedule, and budget and worked very closely with Dr. Chhabra and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, UVA Health leadership and hundreds of stakeholders across UVA for six years.”

Critical stakeholders included UVA Health Facilities Planning & Capital Development, Health System Physical Plant, Office of the University Building Official, Office of the University Architect, UVA Health Clinical Engineering, CC&R Office of Contract Administration, Energy & Utilities, Landscaping Services, the Sign Shop and the Lock Shop.

"[The center] has exceeded all of my expectations," said Dr. Chhabra. "It is not only an exceptional place for patients to receive comprehensive, innovative orthopedic care, but it is a great place for our team members to work. I am grateful for the incredible support from our UVA team members and UVA leadership who helped make this dream a reality. This center is clinically differentiating and will help elevate the national reputation of UVA and UVA Health."
