Facilities Management employees collaborate to update the department’s mission statement

In the fall of 2021, Facilities Management first kicked off an effort to update its mission statement, something staff members had expressed a desire to do in recent surveys.

A group of 14 Facilities Management employees – led by Occupational Training, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and a consultant – worked to create and refine the department’s organizational mission statement to better reflect the daily work and purpose of employees at all levels.

Over several workshop sessions, more than 60 statements were created, evaluated, and synthesized for a single inclusive mission statement that was then presented to leadership in the spring of 2022: “We serve and plan for our community today, while assessing and adapting to the needs of tomorrow.”

The mission team then expanded to include additional representatives from all areas who worked with their leadership to better understand how their daily work supports this updated mission. In the coming fiscal year, teams will continue to take additional steps to build consistency and ownership of the department’s mission and consider how it can be supported by strategic goals and strategies.
