HVAC Mechanic Senior
Can you briefly describe what you do?
I operate the chiller plants, I have been doing on-call for the chiller plants for about 10 years, preventative maintenance on the chillers, cooling towers, motor starters, VFDs, condenser, and chilled water pumps.
How long have you worked at Facilities Management?
19 years. I started as a temp with UVA Recycling in 2002 the summer I turned 17. I applied and was selected for the HVAC apprenticeship in the summer of 2003. I graduated from the apprenticeship program and received my HVAC journeymen’s license in 2007.
What do you feel was your greatest accomplishment at work this past year?
Coming up with a drawing for piping and electrical of an Automatic Tube Cleaning System (ATCS). I submitted my drawings and other required information to the Office of the University Building Official then got the permit for the job and coordinated with contractors to complete the job and get the ATCS working properly. Outside of work, I completed my Industrial Electronics Technology, Associates of Applied Science degree at Piedmont Valley Community College this summer.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the little town of Troy in Fluvanna County.
Did you have a dream job as a child?
As a child, I thought it would be awesome to be a race car driver, either round track or drag. I enjoyed both.
What do you like to do in your time outside of work?
Outside of work I spend as much time with my kids as I can. My boys play soccer and my youngest is currently on the Fluvanna Youth Soccer Association Travel team. We have practice twice a week and games on the weekends. I am also enjoying football season. We’re a family that enjoys sports of all kinds.
Who or what inspires you and why?
My kids inspire me. They push me to be a better man and father. I would have never tried to accomplish an associate's degree, but I wanted to show my kids that even as adults we can always push ourselves to do better and learn more.
Can you share a great piece of advice you’ve been given?
Even when you want to just quit and give up, as long as you strive and do your best you can accomplish just about anything.
What is the best part of your day?
When I get home and can relax and spend time with the family. It’s a plus when I get to grill and enjoy a good dinner and watch some of our favorite shows when we eat.
What’s one place in the world that you would like to visit that you haven’t before?
I would like to be able to visit Europe one day.
