A remodeled restroom that meets ADA standards

3. Building the future Restroom remodel

Facilities Management teams upgrade restrooms across Grounds to modern standards.

Capital Construction & Renovations (CC&R) teams have supported numerous projects to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of restrooms across Grounds in recent years. Ongoing projects include improving accessibility and increasing the number of female and all-gender facilities.

Current projects designed by CC&R Design Services and completed by Construction & Renovation Services include the Mechanical Engineering Building, Zehmer Hall and Kerchof Hall.

Bathrooms in these buildings are being upgraded to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards if they are not already compliant, and all-gender restrooms are being added. In addition, the number of female restrooms will be increased in the Mechanical Engineering Building, which included very few in the original building design. The CC&R Design Services team also started an assessment of the restrooms in Brown Hall at the UVA School of Law to determine if existing restrooms can be converted to all-gender restrooms.

In recent years, a working group that included members of Facilities Management, the University's LGBT Committee and the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights developed a new standard signage for marking single-stall, all-gender restrooms that would be community inclusive and compliant with state and building code requirements. The new sign is readily available from the Sign Shop and installed on individual restrooms as requested by department.
