Facilities Management teams support a variety of projects that improve the experience of all members of the UVA Health community.
Capital Construction & Renovations’ staff members have managed multiple recent projects to replace radiology equipment at UVA Imaging’s Fontaine Building 415, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and the UVA Transitional Care Hospital.
These projects – managed by Senior Project Manager Kevin Silson – were completed in phases by Construction & Renovation Services trades and involved the renovation of rooms to accommodate upgraded MRI and CT scanning equipment. UVA Imaging’s Fontaine Building 415 also incorporated wallpaper of nature scenes to provide a relaxing atmosphere for patients.
Health System Physical Plant (HSPP) recently helped UVA Health with a project aimed to tackle the question, “What could have made your job easier today?” In February 2021, the clinical nurse specialist team, working with front-line staff, identified some issues with the hospital’s barcode scanners that are used daily by nurses to scan every medication, infusion, lab and fluid given to a patient. The team noted that all 617 scanners in the hospital were not placed in the rooms appropriately, often behind a curtain or around a monitor.
The team partnered with the HSPP Renovations team, UVA Health IT and leadership to replace the scanners as soon as possible, ensuring a more ideal placement for a critical piece of equipment.
In addition to supporting UVA Health’s current employees, Facilities Management staff recently completed a project to expand the UVA School of Nursing’s Simulation Center in McCleod Hall. The project – also managed by Kevin Silson, designed by CC&R Design Services and completed by Construction & Renovation Services trades – involved demolishing existing classrooms to build a new lab with simulation, debrief, control and storage rooms. The project has nearly doubled the School of Nursing’s simulation lab space and allowed for the use of several new high-fidelity mannequins.
